2. Believe In YourselfOnce discovering your purpose in life, I would recommend writing it down, or printing it on a piece of paper, lamanating it, and then framing it so you never lose sight of why you are here. But it takes more than just knowing your purpose in life. You actually have to believe in yourself to begin achieving what your purpose in life is. Not only that, everything you do in life becomes much more manageable if you believe in yourself.
How Do I Believe in Myself?I've spoken with many people who do not believe in themselves. Life passes them by, with opportunities, and their mode remains the same. They lack confidence and a belief that they are a worthwhile person, that they can benefit the world around them, and that they can actually make a difference. Their passivness rules their thinking and achievement to them is like speaking a foreign language. Gaining belief is by no means a simple thing to do. However, I believe there are some simple steps that one can follow to get on the path that will lead to the kind of belief that makes people great.
Desire to BelieveYou don't even have to believe that you are worth anything to begin this step. But it makes sense that if you do not believe in yourself, and are unhappy with anything in life, that changing that would be a priority. Therefore, all you have to do is desire to believe. Getting the desire to believe is not some complex formula that takes years to figure out. It comes down to making a choice. Read the following several times - it is a short excerpt that will assist you as you seek to believe in yourself.
I may have a long ways to go, but I know I can do my best and make choices in my life that benefit myself and others. I may not have all the answers, or any answers. But if I am patient and forgiving of myself, and constantly seek out the best things in life, eventually things will begin to turn around for the better. Events will begin to happen that favor me. I know that with a belief in myself, I will awaken greatness in me. That greatness will pave the way for me to provide for myself and all those around me in their lives. I will do wonderful things because I believe in myself.
Why Believe in Yourself?Believing in yourself applies if any of the following are true:
- You are unhappy with any area of your life
- You are unhappy with anyone around you
- You would like to accomplish something
- You need to overcome a challenge
- You are having difficulty accepting things out of your control
- You feel within you there is something more
- You would like to help people
- You exist - that's right, believe in yourself because you exist
Remind Yourself of Your BeliefThere are likely times in your life where a belief in yourself is strong and clear. It is important that during these times that a record or some kind of journal be kept. It is a wonderful thing during a difficult time to see that in us the belief was and is still strong. Reading evidence of this during a challenge will help strengthen and validate that you are capable.
Never Underestimate YourselfPaul Potts, a native of Great Britain, had two parents, one a bus driver (father) and another a supermarket cashier (mother). Paul was bullied in school and lacked self confidence. He became the manager of a carphone warehouse - a mobile phone store. It would be easy for Paul to become depressed and not find any belief in himself for a better life. He obviously believed in himself and took steps to change his life. Watch this video as he does hist first audition on June 9, 2007, at the Britain's Got Talent television show!
Paul Potts, a Shining Example of Self-Belief
It is Within ALL of UsPaul had some amateur experience in opera, but was never paid for it. His belief in himself has now led him to where he is now, touring doing opera, which is his life long dream. Each of us has the potential to do great things. It is within all of us to awaken something great within ourselves. The person working at a corner shop, living in run down housing has the potential for great things as much as anyone else - they may need to work much harder for it, but that will only give them an advantage later on. Finding a puprose to your life and believing in yourself are two crucial steps. Once these have been achieved, much of the guessing in life gets taken out. You see purpose and meaning to what you do. You no longer are drifting, trying to figure out what to do. You can awaken the greatness within if you only start off desiring to believe in yourself.
I Can't Accept Not TryingMichael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time as of the year 2008, writes an interesting book. The book is titled, "I Can't Accept Not Trying". In it, Jordan talks about some simple things. He says, "I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying." This is a simple but meaningful statement. Even with a knowledge of your purpose in life and a belief in yourself, you still will likely face failures in the things you do. It is ok to fail. The more you fail, the closer you will get to succeeding. Do not be discouraged from being proactive and seeking to achieve your dreams because of a fear of rejection. Do not let such negativity hinder your greatness!
Constantly Build Up Your Self BeliefOnce a desire to believe has been achieved, and the actual belief in yourself has been achieved, it must be fueled in order to maintain. The fuel is your own work ethic, your determination, your being impenetrable to negativity, your persistence. You can do it. The following is a simple poem by Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds. Say what you want about McDonalds, it is arguably the most successful fast food chain restaurant in existence as of 2008.
Press On, by Ray Kroc
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination are omnipotent.
Is talent, genius, and education useless then? Of course not! However, the number one thing that will determine your self belief, and ultimately your success is your persistence and determination to make it happen. Your studying, hard work, and the finding of your purpose in life, and believing in yourself is what it will take. The road will be difficult, but the reward many times greater!
But Things are Too HardHard, easy, whatever the difficulty of something is, it is only a smoke screen. Do not be concerned with how hard something is. The harder something is, the likeliness of it being more worthwhile than something 'easy'. I am one man. I have a knowledge of building websites. I seek to build a website that will assist people with becoming better in their life. I will put in the effort to make sure the site gets ranked by major search engines, has the resources available to help people, and is a success. Is this easy? NO! It is a challenge - a taxing task! Is it worth it - you bet!
I am fully aware of the immense challenge of making this website successful. But I believe in myself. I know I have talents and abilities that can help people. I will continue forward with persistence and determination. I have the support of those close to me and I know I can do it.
